WARWICK, R.I. -- The investigation into the Saturday night explosions and fire that destroyed at least three city garbage trucks and heavily damaged other vehicles in the public works yard is continuing, according to city officials.
Mayor Scott Avedisian said late Monday that the city is waiting for findings from the state fire marshal's office.
He said that trash was collected on schedule Monday with the Public Works Department putting older, reserve trucks into service.
The city is insured through the Rhode Island Interlocal Risk Management Trust and Avedisian said that his office has been told that the trust will try to expedite the handling of the claim given the fact that it would take time to replace the specialized trucks if it is determined that none of them can be repaired.
Around 9 p.m. on Saturday, neighbors heard at least three explosions as a smoky fire -- fueled by the diesel in the trucks -- appeared to destroy three of the city's mechanized garbage trucks and heavily damage other vehicles nearby.
The trucks had last been used that afternoon and were parked in the public works yard on Sandy Lane, which is locked and gated.
