WARWICK, R.I. -- Four days after fire destroyed three garbage trucks parked in the public works yard on Sandy Lane, one of the trucks ignited again, according to city officials.
And officials are saying that electrical problems are the likely cause of both blazes.
Public Works Director David Picozzi said Thursday that he was notified at about 5:30 a.m. that one of the trucks was engulfed in flames -- again.
He said that it was extinguished quickly by the Warwick Fire Department.
The investigation into the original fire, which occurred Saturday night and involved more vehicles, is still ongoing but earlier this week officials said that preliminary indications were that the cause was electrical.
On Thursday Warwick police affirmed that finding, stating in a press release that evidence collected from the truck shows that "an electrical problem was the cause of both fires."
Officials have said that area residents reported hearing at least three explosions Saturday night and on Monday fire officials said that it was likely the sound of tires exploding.
Mayor Scott Avedisian said Thursday that the two fires have been investigated by the Warwick Fire Department, the state Fire Marshal's office and Warwick Police detectives.
The Saturday fire totaled three garbage trucks and heavily damaged other nearby vehicles.
The city is insured for the loss.
