BARRINGTON, R.I. -- As they begin a three-year celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of their patron saint and founder, the Carmelite nuns on Sunday are sponsoring a talk by an internationally known author and theologian, Keith J. Egan, professor at Notre Dame University.
The talk, at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carmelite's monastery, is free and open to the public.
Founder St. Teresa of Avila was born on March 28, 1515, in Spain. Described by the Barrington sisters as "the 16th-century Spanish mystic and first woman doctor of the church," Teresa founded 15 Carmelite monasteries.
The Barrington sisters will also sponsor events in October 2014 and 2015.
Theologian Egan will speak on Saint Therese of Lisieux, a 19th-century French Carmelite who is popularly known as "the Little Flower of Jesus." She was described as "the greatest saint of modern times" by Pope Pius X.
The monastery is located at 25 Watson Ave., Barrington.
