PROVIDENCE, R. I. -- Dr. Fred Drogula, president of the Providence College Faculty Senate, plans at the Senate's next meeting to raise the issue of the school's controversial decision to cancel a lecture on gay marriage.
At that time, the Senate will discuss what action--if any--to take in response to the administration's action. The meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Moore III.
Drougla said that the officers of the PC chapter of the American Association of University Professors will also call a meeting to discuss whether the administration's action requires some response by the local or national AAUP.
PC's provost, Hugh Lena, decided last weekend to cancel a lecture on gay marriage by a well-known philosopher scheduled for Thursday. Lena said he cancelled the event because it violated college policy. He also said that there wasn't enough time to find someone of equal stature to debate John Corvino, chair of the philosophy department at Wayne State University.
