The Providence Latin American Film Festival, now in its 21st year, gets underway tonight and runs through Sunday with screenings of films from Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Spain, Venezuela and the United States.
"7 Cajas" (7 Boxes), a film from Paraguay, opens the festival at 7 p.m. at the University of Rhode Island's Feinstein Campus in downtown Providence. Other weekend venues include Bryant University in Smithfield, Providence College, and the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane. The festival runs through Sunday.
Over the years, PLAFF has screened more than 650 feature films, shorts, documentaries and animations. Many have gone on to receive national awards.
