PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island officials are asking motorists to watch out for deer.

The Department of Environmental Management, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and Rhode Island State Police say November is the peak period for collisions between deer and motor vehicles because it is deer mating season.

They say deer move around more during mating season, especially at dawn and dusk, and that heightens the dangers of a crash.

Officials say drivers should avoid swerving as that can cause a more serious crash. Instead, they say they should drive slower at night in areas where deer are common. If a deer darts out, drivers should apply the brakes in a controlled way.

More than 1,000 deer have been struck on the state's roads this year.
