PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Workers laid off because of Hurricane Sandy might be able to skip the one-week waiting period if their employer is granted a waiver from the Department of Labor and Training, Governor Chafee and Director of Labor and Training Charles J. Fogarty announced Wednesday.
Non-seasonal employers forced to lay off workers temporarily as a direct result of storm-related damage are urged to apply for a waiver. Employees are not eligible unless their employer has been granted the waiver.
Also, employers whose storm-related property damage resulted in worker layoffs may be granted relief from related unemployment benefit charges if their businesses are deemed eligible.
Applications can be downloaded. Employers can ask questions by calling (401) 462-8999 or emailing uiemployerhelp@dlt.ri.gov.
