PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- National Grid, which had announced that it expected to restore power to all remaining customers by Friday night, still was reporting 171 outages on Saturday, with most of them in Washington County.
Down from a high of 122,000 outages earlier in the week, after Sandy sideswiped Rhode Island, the utility declared on Saturday that it had "fully restored" electric and gas service in the state.
"We are now setting our focus on helping to restore damage and assist the areas of New York City and Long Island that were devastated by Superstorm Sandy. National Grid thanks its customers for their patience and understanding through this devastating storm," the company announced on its web site.
National Grid Spokeswoman Debbi Drew said, however, that there would still be crews in Rhode Island restoring the last of the outages.
"We will be assisting in the New York effort, but we will make sure our customers are fully restored here as well," Drew said. "We are still working in Rhode Island and ... we will keep crews so that we can complete the New England restoration, which is essentially finishing up. As you see, we are in the homestretch here."
