PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Women & Infants Hospital announced Monday that on Sept. 13 the hospital discovered unencrypted backup tapes containing ultrasound images from facilities at 79 Plain St. in Providence and 67 Brigham Street in New Bedford were missing.
The hospital has still been unable to locate the missing tapes, which in addition to ultrasound images, contain patient names, dates of birth, dates of medical exams, physician names and, in some cases, Social Security numbers. Tapes date from 1993 to 1997 in Providence and from 2002 to 2007 in New Bedford.
"We have no reason to believe that the information on the backup tapes has been accessed or used improperly," said Elizabeth Fecteau, privacy officer at the hospital.
Women & Infants said it began notifying affected patients Monday.
