PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Merry Christmas, WaterFire fans.
On Monday, organizers of Rhode Island's best-known public art project announced plans for a partial pre-Christmas lighting on Dec. 14.
In a statement, WaterFire Providence thanked an anonymous donor for funding the lighting, which will take place between Waterplace Park and the Steeple Street Bridge. The event, starting at 5 p.m., will also feature an array of holiday-themed activities, including caroling, a tree-lighting and a visit from Santa Claus.
In the spirit of the season, organizers are asking people to bring donations, including new and unwrapped toys, food and clothing. These will be turned over to the Providence Rescue Mission, a non-profit Christian group that works to end poverty and homelessness in the city's West End.
