PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence announced Wednesday that it has invited parishes to participate in a special second collection to benefit storm victims and has also awarded $7,500 to South County social service agencies to provide immediate assistance to those in the greatest need because of the remnants of Hurricane Sandy.
The Diocese said in a news release that it has awarded $2,500 each to The Johnny Cake Center, Westerly WARM Shelter and the Diocesan South County Catholic Charities Satellite Office to help residents and food pantries replace food that spoiled during power failures caused by the storm.
