PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- State troopers arrested a convicted felon early Monday under the state's new law making it illegal for a violent criminal to possess body armor.
"Without question, these troopers prevented some form of violence," State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell said in a news release, commending the governor and General Assembly for passing the law.
Troopers noticed a station wagon with heavily tinted windows parked just north of the East Avenue Dunkin' Donuts, the release said. The driver, Antonio E. Limardo, 34, of 42 Webster St., could not find his registration, and troopers noticed body armor in the back seat.
They seized a 9mm handgun, a knife and two canisters of pepper spray.
Limardo had a 1997 Puerto Rico conviction for a narcotics violation.
