PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton Wednesday evening urged drivers to use caution as the combination of snow and rain made for slippery conditions on area roads.

Stephanie Dunten also warned that the morning commute could be a mess "as snow might transition to a nice glaze of ice in the overnight."

In Providence, wind gusts made the snow, which started at around 3:30 pm., seem to come down horizontally.

At 7:23 p.m. Wednesday, National Grid reported 1,449 customers without power, more than 1,000 of them in Providence.

A high-wind warning is in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday for Newport and Washington counties. After that, it's a high wind advisory.

The forecast calls for lingering showers and wind on Thursday, with a high of 44 and a low of 38 degrees. Friday offers the first chance of sunshine, with a high of 54 and a low of 34.
