The Rhode Island State Police said Thursday that they have lodged 14 new criminal charges against state Rep. Leo Medina, D-Providence, regarding his allegedly obtaining money under false pretenses by posing as someone with legal expertise.
Medina, 48, who was defeated for renomination in his district but remains in office until January, was arrested at his home at 271 Washington Ave. Thursday, arraigned in Providence District Court and released in $10,000 personal recognizance.
He is charged with two counts each of obtaining money under false pretenses and two counts each of violating six other statutes regarding the illegal practice of law. Previously, he was charged with embezzlement and nine counts related to the illegal practice of law.
