PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The results of General Assembly races too close to call Tuesday are now in, with the ever-shrinking Republican caucus holding on to two seats but losing one.
Sen. Nicholas Kettle, R-Coventry, District 21, defeated former Rep. Scott Pollard, following a final counting of mail ballots Thursday.
His win makes it five in the tiny GOP Senate caucus. Previously, Republicans had 8 of 38 Senate seats.
Kettle was named deputy minority whip at a GOP caucus meeting earlier Thursday.
In the House of Representatives, Republican Antonio Giarrusso edged out Democrat Mark Schwager for the District 30 seat vacated by former House Minority Leader Robert Watson.
State Rep. Daniel P. Reilly, R-Portsmouth, lost to Democrat Linda Dill Finn in District 72, dropping the House GOP's membership to 6 from 10.
Republicans now have 11 Assembly members to the Democrats' 101. There is one independent state senator.
