PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The city is holding a beauty pageant of sorts for the best 35- to 45-foot evergreen to stand in glory on the steps of City Hall for the holidays.

Residents are invited to nominate a tree on their own property by sending an email with a photo or description to ddormody@providenceri.com by Wednesday, Nov. 14. The winning tree will be cut down and hauled away by city parks workers.

On Dec. 1, it will star in the city's tree-lighting ceremony, and its owner will get to pose with Mayor Taveras.

Ornaments to benefit Hasbro Children's Hospital will be sold by members of the Johnson & Wales University chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa.

Stanley Tree Service is donating crane services.
