Coventry police discover a pipe bomb during a drug raid at 30 Read Ave. The state bomb squad and an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives rendered the bomb safe.

Sen. John H. Chafee has told the secretary of the Navy that the service should recruit more women and expand their roles. Chafee said the Navy is the only branch of the U.S. armed services not planning to increase the percentage of women in its ranks.
