PROVIDENCE. RI -- The head of a global medical-device company says Providence has the ingredients to be a hub of health and science-based commercial developments.
It has the high-quality colleges and universities and the concentration of hospitals needed to develop the new products that lead to company formations and job growth. But it also needs more entrepreneurs focused on developing "unmet needs" in medicine, investors and targeted tax incentives, said Michael Mahoney, president and chief executive officer of publicly traded Boston Scientific Corp. in Natick, Mass.
Mahoney, of Barrington, just this month took the reins of the company with 24,000 employees spread among seven units that develop cardiology and other medical products.
Mahoney will give the keynote speech Nov. 19 at the annual meeting of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.
