PROVIDENCE, RI -- After taking a couple of days to figure out who got the most votes in Tuesday's elections, state officials say their focus now shifts to how those votes were cast.
Officials from the Board of Elections and Secretary of State said they will examine new elements introduced this year to learn how they may have affected how long people waited in line.
Top on the list was a new law that increased, from 1,900 to 3,000, the number of eligible voters allocated to individual polling places -- a rule that was getting the initial blame for long lines in Providence and Pawtucket Also under scrutiny are: the state's new voter ID law; the number of poll workers and their training; the voting machines; and how mail ballots are counted.
