PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A former corrections officer was sentenced to three years in
prison on Thursday for assaulting inmates at the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Kenneth Viveiros, 60, of North Providence, showed no reaction as Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Procaccini imposed the sentence. He must serve nine months while the remaining 27 months are suspended.

The sentencing had been delayed for years. In July 2008, a jury found Viveiros and Capt. Gualter Botas guilty of 11 counts of simple assault for roughing up inmates in minimum security in 2005 and 2006.

Viveiros, who was a lieutenant, unsuccessfully appealed his convictions in the Superior and Supreme Courts.
