Dean Esserman, former police chief of Providence is been sworn in as the new chief in New Haven. Esserman had been police chief in Providence since 2003 but stepped down June after acknowledging that underage drinking took place at his daughter's graduation party.

Longtime state political figure Dennis M. Lynch dies after being stricken by an unknown illness. Lynch, 74, served nearly five terms as mayor of Pawtucket, from 1973 to 1981.
25 years ago today:
The roseate tern, a slender white bird with a black cap and long forked tail, has been declared an endangered species in the Northeast by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It nests in colonies, on the ground on small islands.
