PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- A woman holding her baby was shot and wounded during a home invasion early Tuesday morning.
It was the second shooting on Merrick Street in eight hours. Maj. Arthur Martins said the home invasion -- which he said appeared to be "mistaken identity" -- wasn't believed to be connected to a drive-by shooting Monday. He declined to identify the victims.
At 6:30 p.m., someone in a small car opened fire on people in an SUV, which drove backwards to escape. The SUV's owner said she'd let someone borrow it, Martins said.
Then, at 2:30 a.m., two armed men broke into 45 Merrick St., waking a couple and their 3-month-old daughter, Martins said. The men pistol-whipped the boyfriend, demanding money and drugs, and shot the woman in the shoulder, Martins said.
There were vague descriptions of the gunmen in both incidents. The police ask anyone with information to call Detective Rick Laforest at (401) 727-9100 ext. 761.
