PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island officials are urging motorists to drive safely as millions of Americans hit the roads for Thanksgiving.

Police throughout the state have stepped up enforcement of the state's seat belt law around the holiday.

State police will also be targeting impaired or intoxicated drivers, aggressive drivers, speeders, those caught texting while driving and other traffic violators in the days before and after Thanksgiving.

The state's Department of Transportation says that 22 of the 37 people who died in motor vehicle accidents in the state last year were not wearing seat belts.

Transportation statistics indicate that 77.5 percent of Rhode Islanders regularly wear seat belts. That is below the national average of 86 percent.
