WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) -- The Woonsocket School Committee has voted to keep open the Fifth Avenue elementary school, despite safety issues with the building.
WPRI-TV reports the board rejected a recommendation by Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan to close the school, which dates to 1917.
It's estimated it will cost the district up to $2.4 million to bring the school up to code. Among other problems, the building has no sprinklers in the basement, despite having several classrooms there.
The board's recommendation now goes before the Woonsocket budget commission.
