PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Donyale Perkins, a Providence man with a lengthy criminal record, pleaded no contest Thursday to three crimes in a drunken driving hit-and-run accident that left two pedestrians with many broken bones.

Perkins, 35, accepted a plea bargain in which he would have to serve 6 1/2 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions, and he pleaded no contest to drunken driving with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and reckless driving/second offense.

On April 11, 2010, Perkins' car struck two Boston women, Nikia Phillips, then 33, and her mother, Earlene Salley, then 60, as they crossed the street near the Crown fried chicken restaurant, 912 Broad St., South Providence, where they had picked up takeout food.
