CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has joined Sen. Jack Reed in endorsing James A. Diossa, the young Central Falls city councilman who is running for mayor in next week;'s special election.
"James Diossa is dedicated to government transparency and fiscal responsibility,'' Whitehouse said in a statement.
In a joint announcement, Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien became the second mayor in Rhode Island to announce his support for Diossa, 28, the son of Colombian immigrants in this predominantly Hispanic city. Angel Taveras, the mayor of Providence, had previously endorsed Diossa.
"James Diossa has consistently shown his resolve to address Central Falls' fiscal troubles and make the city's government more responsive to its residents,'' Grebien said.
In a related development, U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline contributed $1,000 to the Diossa campaign.
