NEWPORT, R.I. -- A Newport man was killed and a second man arrested in connection to an altercation Wednesday night.
The police were called to 53 1/2 Gould St., Apt. B, at 11:12 p.m. for an assault in progress. The tenant, 44-year-old Anthony E. Simmons, was taken to Newport Hospital with multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m.
Witnesses told police Simmons and a second man, identified as 42-year-old Joseph Perryman, had been arguing before the assault.
Officers found Perryman, of no known address, walking on Broadway just north of Gould Street at 11:18 p.m. The police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the assault and Perryman's bloodied clothing.
Perryman is due in court Thursday morning on murder charges.
The investigation continues.
