WARWICK, R.I. -- The Federal Aviation Administration has given preliminary approval to changes requested by T.F. Green Airport in a project to improve safety on the airport's crosswind runway, which the FAA approved last year.
The changes have no impact on plans to extend the airport's main runway.
The airport seeks to scale back the improvements on the crosswind runway because cost estimates for the originally approved project ran too high. The scaled-back plan no longer requires the relocation of Airport Road.
The full-scale improvements had been projected to cost $70 million, but that rose to $110 million when a more detailed estimate was calculated. The scaled-back plan is estimated at $42 million.
A 30-day FAA public comment period on the changes starts Friday.
