BURRILLVILLE, R.I. -- A fire at noon Monday claimed the life of the resident of 145 Steere Farm Rd., police and fire officials said.
Police Maj. Larreto P. Guglietta said the man was Robert Alarie, 57.
Raschel Aubin and Chris Cabral, Alarie's neighbors, said they called 911 and ran to help after a passing motorist noticed flames coming from the house at about noon on Monday. The couple said they knew their neighbor was wheelchair-bound and lived alone. The motorist and Cabral were turned back by smoke.
Firefighters found the body of the man in their rescue effort.
The fire burned through the roof. Fire officials are still investigating the cause.
