PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- New Rhode Island lawmakers are getting their first taste of the State House on Monday, as they run through an all-day series of presentations and workshops organized.

All but two of the 24 incoming lawmakers were at morning sessions in the House chambers, which included welcome remarks from House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, and their Republican counterparts.

The lawmakers attended sessions on the budget, drafting legislation, media relations and the basics of State House life.

Now they are headed to Brown University, where they will lunch and talk policy with Marion Orr, head of the university's Taubman Center.

Later, Fox and Paiva Weed will meet separately with the new members of their respective chambers.
