Diossa becomes Central Falls' first Latino mayor, defeating Moran

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- James A. Diossa cruised to a convincing victory on Tuesday in the city's special mayoral election.

Unofficial results had Diossa, 27, a city councilman, defeating former Police Chief Joseph P. Moran III 62 percent to 38 percent.

Diossa received 1,076 votes; Moran got 650.

Diossa becomes the first Latino mayor since the city was incorporated in 1895. The city is more than 60 percent Hispanic, according to the 2010 Census.
