PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- If you were among the thousands of volunteers who helped Rhode Island recover from superstorm Sandy, Governor Chafee appreciates your efforts. He's declared Thursday as Hurricane Sandy Volunteer Appreciation Day.
An appreciation event was being held at the State House this afternoon.
The governor recognized those who helped clean up tons of debris and sand, mostly in the Misquamicut Beach area; those who signed up with Serve Rhode Island and worked 1,250 volunteer days and 5,800 hours of service; the United Way 211 specialists who took damage reports and made referrals; shelter volunteers; people who inspected restaurants for food safety after power loss, and organizations and businesses that donated resources to transport and feed the volunteers.
The cleanup efforts continue.
