PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Repeating plans he announced last month, state Board of Elections Executive Director Robert Kando said Thursday that he will hire additional technicians for the next general election.
Kando, speaking before a Voter Choice Study Commission that state lawmakers created this year, said local canvassing boards and the state Board of Elections are pressured to "keep expenses down."
But after the number of glitches on Nov. 6, he said he and the state board plan to "hire almost double the number of technicians statewide" to deal with polling machine problems.
Some voters faced long waits on Nov. 6. The most publicized were at the Juanita Sanchez Complex, in Providence, where some people waited three hours.
Kando said last month that the state had about 30 technicians working on Nov. 6 and will have "more than 50" in 2014.
The delays were also caused by multiple-page ballots, strong voter turnout and confusion about new polling locations, he said.
