PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's independent governor says he's considering becoming a Democrat to run for another term.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee told The Associated Press Friday that he's raising money for a re-election campaign and that joining the Democrats would make it easier to raise funds.
Chafee supported President Barack Obama's re-election and that he felt "welcome" when he addressed this year's Democratic National Convention.
Chafee says he's now focused on crafting a state budget proposal only.
Chafee says he is unlikely to return to the Republican Party, which he left in 2007 after losing his U.S. Senate seat.
Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras -- both Democrats -- are believed to be considering a run for governor in 2014. Ernest Almonte, the former state auditor general who is also a Democrat, has said he plans to run for governor in 2014.
