PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin said that on behalf of himself and the Diocese of Providence he extends his "most sincere sympathy and prayers to all those whose lives have been touched by the terrible and tragic events that have taken place" Friday in Connecticut.
Twenty-six people, including 18 kindergarten students, were killed Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., by a lone gunman, who also died.
"Although even the best of words will fail at a moment like this, my prayer is that the birth of Jesus, Emmanuel -- the God who is with us in good times and bad -- will bring some measure of comfort and peace to all," he said.
