EAST PROVIDENCE -- Coach of the winter sports teams at East Providence High School stopped working Friday because coaches of the fall sports teams have not been paid.
Alex Butler, coach of girls volleyball and boys basketball, started the stoppage when he did not receive the $2,800 the Budget Commission had promised. Coaches of girls basketball and boys and girls indoor track followed his lead. The wrestling coach will stop as of Monday.
Butler said the Budget Commission withheld checks for coaches and the band and choir directors. The coaches were supposed to be paid after their final game, which for volleyball was the Division I championship on Nov. 10. He said the Budget Commission then said fall coaches would be paid after the final event of the fall season, the Thanksgiving Day football game against La Salle. That deadline is today.
East Providence's boys basketball game against Bishop Hendricken Friday night was postponed.
