PROVIDENCE, RI -- Six organizations, including the Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, have written a letter to the City Council objecting to a councilman's proposal for a nighttime curfew for teenagers.
Councilman Davian Sanchez has submitted a proposed ordinance to set a curfew for teens up to age 18, but he has kept the terms fluid, including the age limit, until he can solicit feedback from the public.
The organizations contend that a curfew would make "every teenager out at night a criminal suspect." It would exacerbate tensions between the police and youth, they said.
The objectors include Youth in Action, Providence Youth Student Movement, Direct Action for Rights and Equality, Olneyville Neighborhood Association and Univocal Legislative Minority Advisory Coalition.
