BARRINGTON, R.I. -- The Barrington police will increase the police presence at the high school Friday in response to rumors that a former student was planning to do harm to the students and staff.
Supt. Michael Messore said Thursday that there was not a credible threat made against the school.
"Something took place on social media that alerted a lot of students and created a lot of concerns," Messore said. "We've been in contact with the police all day and they have conducted a full investigation. We treat every incident seriously."
In an e-mail to parents Thursday, Principal Joseph Hurley wrote that the police have spoken to the former student and his parents.
"In order to calm the concerns of the school community," Hurley wrote, "it has been determined that we will increase the presence of the Police Department throughout the day tomorrow."
