PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The state has acquired four acres of what Janet Coit, director of the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, calls "a beautiful stretch" of the Pawcatuck River in Westerly.
State open space bonds enabled the $205,000 purchase from Richard Wucik Jr. Federal money from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be used to ready the site for a public access area and parking.
"Thanks to this acquisition, DEM will be able to make this spectacular site and several miles of the river readily accessible to the public," Coit said in a news release.
The land on Post Office Lane near the village of Ashaway in Hopkinton and the Connecticut line includes more than 500 feet of river frontage.
