CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- Steven Corrales, an administrator at Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy, will be the only candidate on the Central Falls ballot to replace James A. Diossa, who was elected mayor last month in a special election.

Sean Murphy, assistant city clerk, said that the other declared candidate in the race, Jeremiah "Augie'' O'Connor, did not return any of the required 50 signatures from registered voters by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline.

O'Connor, 68, a retired Central Falls police officer, held the seat in Ward 4 for one term until Diossa defeated him in November 2009.

"I decided against it,'' said O'Connor Wednesday morning. "There were more minuses than plusses. At my age, let the young people carry on.''

Corrales, 23, returned papers with signatures from 74 registered voters.
