PROVIDENCE -- Singer Harry Belafonte will discuss the role of artist as activist in a talk planned for Tuesday at the Rhode Island School of Design auditorium on Canal Street.

The free talk is part of the Martin Luther King Jr. series. It begins at 7 p.m.

The public is invited, but tickets are required. They are available through RISD's office of intercultural student engagement by e-mail at ise@risd.edu or by phone at (401) 277-4957.

Belafonte, an activist who calls his fight for civil and human rights "a way of life," stirred controversy several years ago by calling Gen. Colin Powell and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice "house slaves" for not blocking the invasion of Iraq during the George W. Bush administration.
