PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Snow has started falling in Providence and it's expected to make the afternoon commute "messy."

It's been snowing since about 1 p.m. in South County.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 1 p.m. until midnight.

"Snow and ice will cause slippery driving and walking conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks," the National Weather Service says in its weather advisory. "The evening rush hour is expected to be messy."

The wintry weather is expected to continue into the evening, but change to sleet, freezing rain and drizzle, first along the coast then inland, according to the forecast from meteorologist Michelle Muscatello.

A coating to 1 inch of snow is expected near the coast, 1 to 2 inches inland, according to WPRI.

The afternoon temperature should reach 32 degrees.
