PROVIDENCE, RI. -- The Diocese of Providence, reacting to complaints of psychological abuse lodged by some former students of Immaculate Conception Academy in Wakefield, noted Monday night that the school is no longer operating in Rhode Island - and along with two other affiliated schools operating in Rhode Island -- it's run by Regnum Christi was never a diocesan school.

At the same time, the Diocese provided a 2009 story in the Rhode Island Catholic quoting Bishop Thomas Tobin as saying he felt the schools' presence was "good" and that he hoped they would expand.

In that story, the bishop acknowledged that there had been some inquiries from anxious parents whose daughters became more deeply involved as adults, but he said since they are now adults "that limits what we can do."
