PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The state Department of Business Regulation says it has determined that The Station Education Fund isn't currently required to register as a charity and file annual financials because it hasn't been receiving contributions in excess of $25,000 per year.

Maria D'Allessandro, deputy director of securities, commercial licensing and racing and athletics at the DBR, told The Providence Journal Thursday that, based on information provided by Jody King, an officer of The Station Fund, it is exempt from registration with the DBR.

The Station Education Fund was started by Michael and Jeffrey Derderian, the owners of The Station nightclub which burned to the ground in February 2003, and their friend Jody King, who lost his brother, Tracy, a bouncer at The Station, in the fire. The fund was created to help the 76 children who lost a parent in the fire.
