PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A wrong-way driver on Route 95 has been arrested and charged by state police with multiple charges.

Robert Sanchirico, 53, of 598 Reservoir Ave., Cranston, was arrested and charged, according to the state police, with eight offenses, including: reckless driving, driving under the Influence of liquor and/or drugs; obstructing an officer in the execution of his duties and refusal to submit to a chemical test-second offense.

Sanchirico was previously convicted in 2009 for refusal to submit to a
chemical test, which makes this conviction a misdemeanor, according to a state police news release.

State police gave this account: the Lincoln Woods Barracks received a 911 telephone call around 3:55 a.m. about a "possible intoxicated operator" driving the wrong way on Route 95 north in the city of Providence.

The trooper who responded "encountered the wrong way driver on
Route 95 in Warwick and activated the cruiser emergency lights, but the vehicle failed
to stop and continued traveling in the wrong direction.

"Moments later the vehicle was involved in a collision with a northbound vehicle at the route 37 overpass. No injuries were reported at the scene. Further investigation revealed that the operator appeared highly impaired.''
