PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- John J. McCauley, the longtime legislator from Smith Hill, has begun serving his 27-month prison sentence at Fort Devens, a federal medical center in Massachusetts.
McCauley, who pleaded guilty to cheating the government out of $500,000 in taxes, will be among 1,300 prisoners housed in a medium-security prison and minimum security camp at the compound about 39 miles west of Boston.
Among the prisoners there are Anthony M. "The Saint'' St. Laurent, a longtime capo in the Patriarca crime family, John Franzese, former underboss of the Colombo crime family and Frank "Frankie Loc" LoCascio, a close lieutenant to John Gotti, the late boss of the Gambino crime family.
Disgraced Providence lawyers Joseph Bevilacqua and John M. Cicilline also spent time at Fort Devens.
