RI marks anniversary of Korean War ceasefire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island veterans and officials have marked the anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

Governor Chafee and several veterans of the war took part in a ceremony Friday at the Korean War Memorial on South Main Street in Providence. A memorial wreath was laid at the monument during the event.

The annual ceremony marks the July 27, 1953, ceasefire that ended the Korean War.

Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the ending of the conflict.

According to state records, 145 service members from Rhode Island died in the war and 55 were reported missing in action.
