New England Institute of Technology has received a $2.5 million federal stimulus grant to develop a shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing institute and a $50,000 Rhode Island Foundation Make It Happen grant to market the new program, the school announced Thursday.
"We are going to serve a diverse population with this grant," said Steven Kitchin, New England Tech's vice president for corporate education and training. That will include the unemployed and new high school graduates entering the career world.
The institute will provide skills assessments and information about job opportunities and will develop training courses.
The money from the Rhode Island Foundation will be used to advertise the program. "We need to find new and creative ways to attract people to these viable careers," Kitchin said.
