PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- At 12 hours and 10 minutes, the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on competing same-sex marriage bills was the longest committee hearing in recent memory, said Tom Coderre, the Senate's chief of staff.
A total of 461 people signed up to speak, though some may have left before they were called.
The committee took no action on the bills -- one that would legalize same-sex marriage and one that would put a referendum before voters, asking if they want to legalize same-sex marriage.
It remains to be seen when the committee will revisit the issue.
Chairman Michael McCaffrey said this week that members will "digest the testimony" and then he will "sit down with the Senate president and the majority leader and we'll see when they want to schedule the bills for a vote."
