Scout, the autonomous vessel, is on its way again!
The 13-foot, kayak-shaped autonomous vessel is making its second attempt at an unprecedented transatlantic voyage after its first effort was aborted. Its destination: Spain.
The team of college students from Tiverton that has spent three years building the solar-powered, GPS-guided vessel relaunched it early on July 4. By late Friday morning, it was nearly 50 miles from Rhode Island and well south of Martha's Vineyard.
Scout's first trip began June 29 from Tiverton's Fogland Beach. The team had to retrieve the vessel when cloudy weather prevented the battery from recharging just as tides and winds were threatening to dash it ashore of Noman's Island off Martha's Vineyard.
To help avoid that situation this time, Scout was launched from the western side of Sakonnet Point under more favorable weather and tide conditions.
